Day Seven: Have you ever noticed how common gestures change over time? AH pointed this out to me today after work. For example, the request “call me” is often, or often has been, accompanied by the thumb and pinky finger, outstretched in opposite directions, being held up to the ear like a telephone. You rarely see this gesture anymore though (it always did look a bit silly). It’s rapidly being replaced by fingers pecking the air and thumbs wiggling madly with hands wrapped around an imaginary phone: “e-mail me,” “text me,” “facebook me.” When you think about it, it only makes sense that our gestures would change to represent different modes of communication. It’s just not something I’d ever noticed before and I found it quite amusing.
